Comparing Digital Camera Flash

Comparing Digital Camera Flash

If you’re buying a digital camera you might want to find out how good the camera’s built-in flash is because the flash on some digital cameras may not be as good as it is on other digital cameras.

My wife bought a not-particularly-cheap digital camera and was disappointed to find that the flash wasn’t very good.

It illuminated objects which were a few feet away but anything further than this was pretty dark. Maybe this criticism is unreasonable. Most photographs are probably taken at this distance. Her digital camera and built-in flash would be fine for most photographers.

Maybe she was expecting too much from the camera. She has a local news web site and takes a lot of photos for the site. Many of these photographs are of large groups of people. Because of this, she has to stand quite a long way away from them. Consequently, the flash has to travel quite far.

It is possible to buy a digital camera that has a really good flash. For example, at about the same time that my wife bought her camera I also bought a leading brand digital camera.

The flash on this camera is very good. In fact it’s nearly as good as the expensive flashgun that I use with my professional single lens reflex or SLR digital camera. Objects that are quite a distance away are as evenly-lit as those that are just a few feet away.

The flash on digital cameras does vary, and if you’re concerned about this it’s probably a good idea to do some research, maybe take a look at some compact digital camera reviews, guides or magazines before buying one.

There’s no point in revealing which of `our’ brand of digital cameras has the best flash because there might be other digital cameras out there which are just as good, or even better.
